Celebrate the season with falling snow, festive activities, and more at ‘Tis the Season for Science at the CAL Academy of Science through January 5, 2025.
What has two humps, four antlers, and 24 hooves? A pair of baby camels, reindeer, and yaks, of course—and they’re hoofing it to the Academy this holiday!
Music and magic
Take a break between exhibits to enjoy a live show! Over a dozen local cultural groups will perform in the Piazza, from choruses to Polynesian dancers to master magicians.
Pop-up programs
Interactive experiences abound on every floor of the museum: Slide into the Ice Lab to conduct cool experiments on the connection between salinity and ice, see a penguin-themed puppet show, create your own wintry crafts, and tour the starry skies in the planetarium.
Winter weather
Flurries are in the forecast for San Francisco! Twirl under (non-allergenic, biodegradable, non-toxic, and non-staining) snow swirling in the Piazza twice an hour.
Events are free with admission. CAL Academy hours will vary during holidays. Save money and time by purchasing your tickets in advance.

The Physics Shows are a series of fun, exciting demonstrations of the laws of nature. Expect that the lights will sometimes go out, loud noises are produced, and really “fun” scientific demonstrations.
Best age for the show is 5-12 years with the target age being elementary school. But I have taken kids in middle school and they have enjoyed it also.
The Physics Shows last approximately 75 minutes. The shows are put on by the Foothill College Physics Department. Parking is free in Lot 1.
Join the San Francisco Amateur Astronomers for a FREE evening of exploration and wonder.
Learn about stars and constellations through ancient stories in the Randall’s giant, inflatable planetarium. Look at the cosmos through professional telescopes. Check out amazing deep space photographs and hear about new discoveries. Weather permitting.

Science learning is most effective when combined with an unmistakable “WOW!”
Come to drop-in Science Saturdays at the Randall Museum’s science studio to get enthralled by simple science topics presented through project-based activities. Let’s build a rocket to launch or learn about amazing polymers by making a special type of goo. Most classes produce a fun project to take home and continue the discoveries.
Cost $10 per adult/child combo; $5 per each additional person. Ages 3 and up. Children 7 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
