Lunar New Year | San Mateo County History Museum

The San Mateo County History Museum will join in Redwood City’s annual celebration of the Asian Lunar New Year. 

Outdoor performances on Courthouse Square and indoor activities within the History Museum will be free to the public. 

Children’s activities within the History Museum will include making traditional New Year’s red envelopes, writing lucky symbols in Chinese calligraphy, making paper lanterns, learning to use chopsticks, adding with an abacus and playing folkloric games.

San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade

The San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade is the highlight event of the annual Chinese New Year celebrations in San Francisco. 

The San Francisco Chinese New Year celebration is now the largest Asian event in North America as well as the largest general market event in Northern California. The celebration includes two major fairs, the Chinese New Year Flower Fair and Chinatown Community Street Fair. All the festivities culminate with Chinese New Year Parade.

Nowhere in the world will you see a lunar new year parade with more gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions, and exploding firecrackers.

Sit along the parade route or secure your seat by purchasing Bleacher Seats in advance.

Entry is subject to capacity; admission is not guaranteed. Daytime Member & Donor Hours (Sundays, 10:00 a.m.–noon) will not be available this day.

Volunteer Away Your San Jose Public Library Fines

If you haven’t heard yet, San Jose Public Library is offering a way for library visitors to get rid of their library fines by volunteering in the library at the equivalent of $20 per hour.The first city wide date will be January 21, 2017 to coincide with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but there are several other ‘volunteer away your fines’ dates on the San Jose library event calendar.

San Jose Emergency Prep Town Hall 2/4/17

Time to review and practice. The Town Hall will kick off at 9:00 a.m. at the Cypress Community Building and will feature; Office of Emergency Services, San José Fire Department, and San José Police discussing their how they respond and their roles during local disasters. After the Town Hall, San José Prepared will be offering emergency preparedness training for residents.
