End summer with science: Immerse yourself in the natural world at the California Academy of Sciences’ annual Teen Science Night, a teen takeover night at the museum. Youth (ages 13-18) are invited to come explore the world of science at this free, fun-filled event.

Marian’s Notes: This is a fantastic night for teens at the Cal Academy!  There is time for the kids to explore the Academy, talk to the partner groups and get info on partner organization’s teen programs.  The teens can enjoy the Cal Academy without having to ‘wait in line’ or take a back seat to younger children.

Free Kids Bowling at Local Bowlmor AMF Locations 8/5

Kids Fest is scheduled for Saturday, August 5th and Saturday, August 19th at various Bowlmor AMF locations nationwide, which includes your local Bowlmor Lanes, Bowlero, Brunswick Zone and AMF centers.

During the Kids Fest Event, kids of the age 15 and younger will receive one free hour of bowling and shoe rental, along with an official Kids Fest sticker. Adults will receive one hour of bowling for just $5, and food and drinks will be discounted as well.

Free Movies in the Park: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone | St. James Park

Free outdoor movies come to to St. James Park in San Jose each Saturday in August. Fun and games precedes screenings of four family favorites.

  • Aug. 19: Nacho Libre
  • Aug. 26: Star Wars The Force Awakens

I spent April 22nd with staff, families and friends of Comcast at Sutro Elementary in San Francisco as part of Comcast Cares Day.  What can get done when several hundred of people show up to paint walls and fences, clean windows and brighten classrooms?  A heck of lot. As schools begin AP testing and students prepare for the June SAT test, just a reminder that most of the Bay area libraries offer free online test prep.  You can usually find the link under Teens, E-leaning, or Homework.

How many library cards do you have?  Public library cards in California are free and it does make a difference with books, ebooks, discounts and some online services. So don’t stop with just one.

Volunteer Away Your San Jose Public Library Fines

If you haven’t heard yet, San Jose Public Library is offering a way for library visitors to get rid of their library fines by volunteering in the library at the equivalent of $20 per hour.The first city wide date will be January 21, 2017 to coincide with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but there are several other ‘volunteer away your fines’ dates on the San Jose library event calendar.

San Jose Emergency Prep Town Hall 2/4/17

Time to review and practice. The Town Hall will kick off at 9:00 a.m. at the Cypress Community Building and will feature; Office of Emergency Services, San José Fire Department, and San José Police discussing their how they respond and their roles during local disasters. After the Town Hall, San José Prepared will be offering emergency preparedness training for residents.
