Silicon Valley Power Scholarship Program – Appy Now!

Silicon Valley Power (SVP) announced today that it is now accepting applications tomorrow for its Scholarship Awards Program for the 2018-2019 school year.
SVP awards up to three college scholarships of $5,000 and up to five technical school grants of $2,000 to new and continuing college students who are pursuing careers related to the power industry. Students must live or go to school in Santa Clara to be eligible. Applications are due by Dec. 15, 2017.

Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band Auditions – High School Students

High school students are invited to audition for the 2017-2018 Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band. Auditions are open to all high school students who are prepared for an intensive jazz performance group. All positions in the ensemble are open each fall.

10th Annual Halloween Haunt At California’s Great America Lets The Fear Begin TONIGHT!

New for 2017, DEMON: RE-IGNITED! returns the lights, fog, music and blood-red waterfall to the iconic Demon roller coaster. Two new mazes will raise fears to new levels.  Chaos House will provide mystifying special effects including mirrors, strobes and fog to confuse and confound guests, and Backwoods leads guests to a deserted cabin through woods full of werewolves. All three scare zones have been reincarnated with 2017 introducing Jester Town, Underworld Alley and Feary Tales.

The Oakland/Bay Area Chapter of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women invites you to learn about our signature program-Positive Steps.

 

The Positive Steps Program is a mentoring program for young ladies that focuses on personal growth and development, cultural enrichment, and social development. Positive Steps affords young women, ages 12-17, an opportunity to further recognize their potential for success. Positive Steps Program participants take an active role in a variety of NCBW events and they are recognized for achievement during the annual Madam C.J. Walker Business and Professional Women’s Luncheon. Participants may also receive graduation and matriculation awards and an opportunity to receive one of the Coalition’s Annual Scholarship Awards.
Deadline to apply has been extended until September 15, 2017

Back to School – Getting a Jump on Next Year
Here is a tip for those with kids in high school.  Each year, schools have ‘Parent Night’ to let parents know what to expect during the school year: college prep events, SAT/PSAT tests, expenses during the year and important dates.

 

Get a jump on these topics by going to the ‘Parent Night’ for grade ahead of your child.  For example, this year my teen is a Junior in high school.  I will go to both the 11 grade and 12 grade parent nights.

 

Don’t forget to check out the College Prep page on CelebrateFamily.us.  College Fairs begin Sept 10, 2017.  Deadline to register for October SAT is Sept. 8.  Test date for PSAT for juniors interested in National Merit Scholarships is October 18, 2017.

Free Movies in the Park: Star Wars The Force Awakens | St. James Park

Free outdoor movies come to to St. James Park in San Jose each Saturday in August. Fun and games precedes screenings of four family favorites.

Movies are shown at dusk. Each film is preceded by fun and games that start about an hour ahead. Movie-goers are encouraged to bring a sweater or sweatshirt and blankets or chair to sit on.
$5 parking is available after 6 p.m. in city-owned garages, including one on Third Street near St. John Street and at the Market-San Pedro garage. Find more at www.parksj.org.

Star Wars Force Friday II – Find The Force

Just a heads up about this AR event next week. From Sept 1 – 3, Disney and LucasFilm are having a pop up AR treasure hunt.

To participate, download the Star Wars App, then, visit any one of participating retail locations to find a graphic that contains the Find the Force logo. Some retailers are B&M like Target/Barnes and Noble and some are online. When you scan the graphic using the Star Wars App, you’ll reveal a character, who through augmented reality, will appear in the room with you. You can then take photos, record videos. Come back each day to reveal new characters (15 in total across the program’s three-day run).  Have Fun!

Free Kids Bowling at Bowlmor AMF Locations 8/19

Kids Fest is scheduled for Saturday, August 19th at various Bowlmor AMF locations nationwide, which includes your local Bowlmor Lanes, Bowlero, Brunswick Zone and AMF centers.

During the Kids Fest Event, kids of the age 15 and younger will receive one free hour of bowling and shoe rental, along with an official Kids Fest sticker. Adults will receive one hour of bowling for just $5, and food and drinks will be discounted as well.
Please visit Bowlmor AMF’s website (https://www.bowlmoramf.com/) to find your closest participating center. From there, check the center’s event page or call the center directly to see what day they will be hosting Kids Fest.

 

Free Movies in the Park: Nacho Libre | St. James Park

Free outdoor movies come to to St. James Park in San Jose each Saturday in August. Fun and games precedes screenings of four family favorites.

Movies are shown at dusk. Each film is preceded by fun and games that start about an hour ahead. Movie-goers are encouraged to bring a sweater or sweatshirt and blankets or chair to sit on.
$5 parking is available after 6 p.m. in city-owned garages, including one on Third Street near St. John Street and at the Market-San Pedro garage. Find more at www.parksj.org.

 

Internet Essentials – Internet for $9.95/Laptops for $150
Affordable Internet at Home for Eligible Households

 

Internet Essentials is Comcast CA’s community program to get internet to families in Northern California.  They have now expanded the program to seniors with low income too.

If you qualify for the program, you can also purchase a Windows 10 Laptop with Microsoft Office installed for $150.  If you heard about the event on Thursday, where Comcast gave away free laptops to several hundred people, this is part of the program.

If you haven’t head, Movie Pass is offering a monthly subscription for $9.99.  The subscription allows you to watch a movie every 24 hours.  The subscription is for standard showings, but you can pay extra for 3D and IMAX.

3 pm, every day at your local participating Disney store. A different event each week and each week, kids get a different patch.  Collect all 10 and get a special Mickey and Minnie patch at the end of the summer.

Just imagine being able to shop for goodies you see in the Scholastic book flyers!  My kids used to love (and me too!) to bring home the sheets and choose books and pencils, posters and science kits.

Michael’s Camp Creativity Registration is Open Now

This is an in store event at Michael’s stores.  Arts and crafts events are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 am – 12pm.  Classes are for kids 3 years and up.  The cost is $5 per session or $12 for 3 sessions. Parents are required to stay in the store with their kids.  I would suggest registering in the store as not all of the store locations have their links up.

1) There is a new dinosaur exhibit.
