Today: Fabulous Fossils at Pearl Avenue Library.
“Fabulous Fossils” is an engaging workshop about fossil identification and how fossils are formed, and is presented by Science Smart Kids teacher, Ildiko Stennis. Children (age 5 to 12) will observe real fossil samples of some of the following specimens: ammonites, brachiopods, clam, coral, crinoid stem, diatomite, dinosaur bone, petrified wood, shark teeth and trilobite. Children will use photographs and an identification key to learn about these ancient creatures. In addition to the hands-on science activities, children’s books and crafts will be incorporated in the workshop in order to enhance the understanding of the science concepts. Each child will make a sample of a trace fossil to take home. (Estimated time: 45-60 minutes).

Today: 3D Printing Drop-In @ TeenHQ at Dr. MLK, Jr. Library
Middle and high school students are welcome to explore 3D printing with this drop-in program at TeenHQ’s MakerSpace. Teens will learn the (very) basics of 3D printing, test a design for printability, then schedule their print for later pick-up.
Teens can choose a design from Thingiverse or bring their own design from home. Designs from home must be in an .stl file format and fit on a USB. All prints must be able to go on a TeenHQ USB and claimed when print is available for pick-up. Designs are considered printable if able to load and save on Lulzbot Cura, but the librarian has final say. All prints must take less than 8hrs 30 minutes. All prints are free as long as they meet the printable criteria above and below.
Program is first come, first serve. The first 8 teens will be able to reserve prints.
Laptops are available but may be limited. You may bring your own device, but we recommend downloading and installing Lulzbot Cura prior to attending the program.
All who schedule a print must pick up their print within 3 weeks of being notified their print is ready unless you notify the librarian of any issues. The librarian will email and/or call to notify that the print is ready at TeenHQ for pick-up.
