Families are invited to the Presidio Visitor Center on Saturday, November 2, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., to explore the traditions and cultural connections between two ancestral celebrations, Dia de los Muertos and Diwali.
Come learn about the traditional foods, art activities, and participate in a fire ceremony. Enjoy paper flower making, henna artwork, facepainting, and remember loved ones by sharing a special message to add to the altar and fire ceremony. Interact with park staff through engaging activities shared through the Roving Ranger.

A Cultural Celebration of Día de Los Muertos
The Mexican Heritage Plaza (La Plaza) proudly presents the Annual Avenida de Altares (Avenue of the Altars), a free, immersive and uniquely San Jose cultural event celebrating Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This beloved community tradition invites families and visitors to honor ancestors, experience rich Mexican traditions, and celebrate life through art, music, and food.
Once you’ve explored Avenida de Altares, step into La Plaza’s festive grounds for an array of activities that embody the spirit of the celebration. From tarot readings, free face painting to local artisans selling unique handmade creations, there’s something for everyone. Visitors will also find picturesque cemetery installations, offering beautiful decor and perfect photo opportunities to honor the tradition of remembering loved ones with reverence and joy.

This free public event is packed with entertainment and activities, including:
- Headliner: Las Cafeteras – Enjoy their high-energy, socially conscious music that will get everyone dancing.
- Lucha Libre – Watch Day of the Dead-themed Lucha Libre wrestling by Pro Wrestling Revolution, featuring thrilling nighttime bouts with masked wrestlers.
- Afterlife Art Exhibit – Curated in partnership with Works San Jose, this exhibit features art focused on life after death.
- Dance & Music – Performances by Los Lupenos, Bloco do Sol, Calpulli Ocelocihuatl, DJs, and more at La Plaza and community hubs along the Alum Rock Corridor.
- Retail & Artisans – Explore handcrafted art, clothing, accessories, and more from local creators.
- Food & Drinks – Savor traditional savory and sweet treats, including micheladas from Michelada Lady, wine, beer, and more.

Luna Mexicana is one of the Bay Area’s most elaborate and inclusive Dia de los Muertos events. Like the celebration that inspires it, Luna Mexicana is a beautiful blend of exuberant dance, joyful music, colorful costumes, flowers, candles, food, and – most of all – a celebration of family.

The Coco Sing-Along captures the spirit of the Day of the Dead celebration with its vibrant colors, lively music, and elaborate altars adorned with flowers and offerings. It is a heartwarming story that celebrates family, tradition, and the importance of following your dreams. In addition to the catchy tunes, the Coco Sing-Along also features stunning animation and attention to detail in every scene. The Land of the Dead is a breathtakingly beautiful world, filled with colorful buildings and characters that glow with an otherworldly radiance. The designs of the characters are also visually striking, with their intricate clothing and makeup reflecting the culture and traditions of Mexico.
Performances and activities have been developed for kids ages 4 to 12 with parent supervision.
