Science from Scientists: DNA Lab | SJPL | Online

Learn about the process of extracting DNA from cells, how scientists use DNA, and test out your skills to look at your own DNA!
A scientist will guide participants through the process of extracting DNA from their cheek cells using common household items. Recommended for Grades 3-8
If you would like to participate, please have the following materials accessible:
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp dish soap
~½ cup of water
¼ cup rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer
Food coloring optional
Registration is required to receive a link and password. Registration will close 1 hour before the program begins. Links and passwords will be emailed at least 30 minutes before the program. You will be placed in a waiting room until the program is ready to begin. We do recommend everyone “arrive” at least 10 minutes before the program begins to ensure you are able to get into the “room”. If you do not receive an email with the program link at least 30 minutes before the program begins, please check your spam and other folders. If still unable to find it, please use the Chat to ask a team member for help. For those under 18 years of age who may be joining us, we recommend that a parent/legal guardian be with you during the meeting.
