Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown SF
The annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown SF. This year’s Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15 and April 21-22, 2018. All are welcome to join in the festivities as we celebrate Japanese and Japanese American culture in San Francisco’s Japantown!
The festival will be held within the borders of Laguna and Fillmore Streets and Geary Boulevard. There will be food booths, cultural performances, martial arts, live bands, the annual Queen Program, and more. The Grand Parade will be held on April 22, beginning at 1pm starting from City Hall and concluding in Japantown.
Celebrate along with scores of participants who will be coming from Japan to join in staging the exhibits, demonstrations, and entertainments. Classical and folk dancers will perform both weekends. Experts in karate, kendo, aikido, and judo will demonstrate their skills, and collectors of samurai swords and armor will display their treasures.
There will be exhibits and demonstrations of ikebana (flower arranging), sumi-e (brush/ink painting), calligraphy, bonsai (tree dwarfing), origami, and doll-making. Traditional Japanese music will fill the air at recitals spotlighting koto (harp-like instruments), shakuhachi (bamboo flutes), and shamisen. There will be taiko and karaoke concerts, too, plus performances by several of the Bay Area’s most popular bands, which will add a contemporary “East meets West” dimension.
The festival will be held on Post Street between Laguna and Fillmore Streets. There will be food booths, cultural performances, martial arts, live bands, the annual Queen Program, and more. The Grand Parade will be held on Sunday, April 16, beginning at City Hall and concluding in Japantown.
Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival Special Events for Families
Sanrio Kids’ Corner & Hello Kitty Cafe Truck
Families with children are welcome to visit Sanrio Kids’ Corner, April 8, 9 & 15. The Hello Kitty Cafe Truck will make its 3rd appearance on the 1st festival weekend and will be in the Hello Kitty Area of the festival. Additionally, special 50th Anniversary Hello Kitty gear is available at Amiko Boutique in Japan Center West Mall. This area is located at Webster and Post streets.
Hiro Kimono School Show
Commemorating the 60th year of Osaka-San Francisco sister city relationship, an amazing Kimono show from the Hiro Kimono School is going to be held. Various kinds of Kimono will be shown on the our second weekend, Saturday, April 15th at 1pm at the Sundance Kabuki Cinemas. Admission is free.
