Fun Fact: So why is ice skating called figure skating and vice versa? Until 1980, part of the competition was skating compulsory figures. In fact at one time, the score component for the compulsory figures was so high (60 percent) that if a skater scored strong enough for figures, they would win the competition, even if theirs was not the better free skate.
However, by this time skating organizations included the words, Figure Skating in their titles. And so it remains.
