Young Authors Writing Contest 9th – 12th Grades

Part of the Bay Area Book Festival.
The contest is open to all high school students in the Bay Area. Submissions should be between 1000 and 3000 words.  Prizes range from $50 – $100. Contest submissions are due by April 2, 2018.

Parents for Healthy Kids Grant for the 2018-2019  Up to $1,000

Action for Healthy Kids has announced a new Parents for Healthy Kids grant for the 2018-2019 school year designed for parents and parent-groups (e.g. PTAs, PTOs) to lead school-based physical activity and nutrition initiatives and to engage more parents in student and family health.

 If your school or group has ever thought of starting a school garden, getting kids to eat more fruits and veggies at lunch, or finding ways to ensure their kids get more physical activity in and get the wiggles out during the school day so they can better focus in class, then this grant opportunity is for them. In addition to providing schools with needed funding (grants up to $1,000), AFHK provides schools technical support and resources to activate their grants.

Jr. Ranger Program Open for Registration!

The Junior Ranger Program is a great way to get your kids (both boys and girls) outdoors and into a free, safe, and fun program! Programs take place in several Santa Clara County Parks each spring and fall for kids ages 9-11 (usually 4th-5th grade). Junior rangers explore park history and nature through outdoor adventures with park staff. Students who successfully complete the program earn a badge and certificate! 
 
Graduating junior rangers are invited to a free overnight campout (June 2-3, 2018) with program staff. 
 
Registration forms must be completed and submitted by April 1, 2018.  But don’t wait.  Also, I could not find a requirement that you be a resident of Santa Clara County to apply. Click here for an application and more information.

OK, some fun for the adults!  If you like designing, Bowlero has launched a national bowling shoe design contest.

 #BeBowled as an open call to all up and coming shoe designers, creatives and bowling fanatics around the U.S. to reinvent the traditional bowling shoe. Anyone 18 and up can submit their design, and in June, the winning designer will see their shoe professionally produced and distributed to nearly 100 Bowlero and Bowlmor locations nationwide, rolling out in 2019. 
 
Cash and other prizes (including recognition as a nation shoe designer!) will also be awarded.   Deadline to enter is April 16, 2018.

Imagination Playground Learn & Play Tour on March 16 & 17 at CDM

Imagination Playground will be at the Children’s Discovery Museum 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on March 16, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 17. This is a free but reservations required event.

Educators and parents also will learn how the blocks can help to unleash creativity and build lasting connections. Educators are eligible to receive teaching credit for their attendance.

In addition, children age 2 to 10 will have the opportunity to submit their creations to Imagination Playground’s 2017-2018 Build-A-Thon contest during the San Jose event. The Imagination Playground’s Build-A-Thon allows kids to submit photos of their captivating designs by web or through the official Imagination Playground 3D app, available on both iPhone and Android.

Children who enter by the March 31 deadline will have the chance to win special prizes. [Contest link]

Educators will go home with a 70-piece Small Block Sample Pack. And families will receive a pop-out Mini Playground for attending.

Science & STEM Camp Scholarships for Girls of Color (4th-8th Grade)

National Coalition of 100 Black Women is accepting applications for girls in grades 4-8 for their annual science and STEM camps.  
 
The P:SMT sponsorship program is an innovative education/recreation program designed to increase the number of underrepresented/ underserved girls interested in science, math and technology and to encourage them to pursue opportunities and careers in those areas. Who is eligible? Eligible students for the 2018 P:SMT Sponsorship Program are all females of underrepresented and underserved communities, with a focus on girls of African American descent. 
 
All completed applications must be postmarked by March 10, 2018 and a letter of recommendation is required.  Camps range from overnight to 3 weeks

I hope you had a great Ski Week!  I am still recuperating from a week without the internet!

Some fun activities this weekend – not in the rain – VillaSport Community Day (great play areas and indoor pool), Bass Pro Shop Fishing Clinics, the White Elephant Sale and Free admission to the Asian Art Museum.

The Sing-along for the Next Generation!
Frozen has shown kids around the world that it’s normal to want to burst into song while watching your favorite movie musical. And why not! We invite you to “let it go!” and sing-along to your heart’s content with Elsa, Anna, and Olaf. Of course, it’s not just for kids: any Disney fan worth their snow flurry can belt out both parts to “Love Is An Open Door” and all the catchy Broadway-style tunes in this new sing-along experience.
In “Frozen,” fearless optimist Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter.
